Remarks:

In cooperation with the Institute for Labour Law and Industrial Relations in the European Union at the University of Trier (IAAEU), the Hugo Sinzheimer Institute (HSI) invites you to an expert workshop on the regulation of platform work on the 21st of March 2024 in Frankfurt. Platform work is a new way of matching supply and demand for paid work. The European Union is in the process of establishing new rules to improve working conditions for people working in the gig economy. The Council and the European Parliament have reached a provisional agreement on a proposal for a directive to improve working conditions for platform workers proposed by the Commission.

The Directive introduces two key improvements: it helps to determine the correct employment status of people working for digital platforms, and it sets rules for the use of algorithmic systems in monitoring and decision-making on digital work platforms.

The workshop aims to address the following questions: Can the Directive deliver on its promises? How can working conditions be improved for genuine self-employed workers who use the platform to provide their services? How do the Nordic countries, where the Directive has been criticised, deal with platform workers?
We are very pleased to have Prof Nicola Countouris (University College London), Prof Jeremias Adams-Prassl (Magdalen College, University of Oxford), Prof Christoph Busch (University of Osnabrück/ELSI), Prof Natalie Videbæk Munkholm (Aarhus University) and Sylvia Rainone (European Trade Union Institute) as speakers. The workshop will provide a space to exchange ideas and learn from each other's experiences.
